The proficiency test is conducted on a B-27 Target.  

Shots landing within the X, 9, or 8 rings will earn 5 pointsfor each shot.

Shots landing in the 7 ring will earn 4 points per shot. 

Shots landing outside the 7 ring, but still on the colored portion of the silhouette, will earn 3 points per shot. 

Shots landing outside the silhouette, or off the target completely, will earn 0 points.

Stage 1 - 20 shots from 3 yards
    A.  Five (5) shots fired in a 'One Shot Exercise' 2 seconds allowed
    B.  Ten (10) shots fired in a 'Two Shot Exercise' 3 seconds allowed
    C.  Five (5) shots fired in 10 seconds.

Stage 2 - 20 shots from 7 yards - fired in 5 rounds
    A.  Five (5) shots fired in 10 seconds
    B.  Five (5) shots will be fired in two rounds:
        1.   Two (2) shots fired in 4 seconds
        2.   Three (3) shots fired in 6 seconds
    C.  Five (5) shots fired in a 'One Shot Exercise' 3 seconds allowed
    D.  Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds

Stage 3 - 10 shots from 15 yards - fired in 3 rounds
    A.  Five (5) shots will be fired in 2 rounds:
        1.   Two (2) shots fired in 6 seconds
        2.   Three (3) shots fired in 9 seconds
    B.  Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds

Proficiency (Shooting) Test and Scoring


The Texas Department of Public Safety denotes the format of the Proficiency Test and how the target is scored.  To successfully qualify, shooters must complete this course with a minimum score of 70% (175 points out of a possible 250 points).  If any malfunctions are encountered during shooting, the shooter will work through the problem and finish the course of fire.
